AeroFTP is an FTP client first. Full encryption support with configurable TLS modes (Explicit AUTH TLS, Implicit TLS, opportunistic TLS), certificate verification control, MLSD/MLST machine-readable listings (RFC 3659), and resume transfers (REST/APPE). It then extends this foundation into a broad multi-protocol file management platform through seven integrated product modules - the Aero Family.

AeroFTP bridges server profiles with 15 third-party tools, bidirectionally (import and export), from a unified interface in the GUI (Settings > Export/Import > Bridge) and the CLI (aeroftp import <tool> / aeroftp export <tool>). Recovered credentials are upgraded into the AES-256-GCM encrypted vault on import and re-encoded into each tool's native format on export. Duplicate detection shows which servers already exist, with the option to update credentials on re-import.

Credentials: Full = the secret is recovered and upgraded into the vault; Limited = only part of the secret material (host-bound or optional); Metadata only = connection metadata is imported but the secret stays in the OS keychain / SSH agent / an interactive prompt. rclone crypt interop (full read/write): in addition to profile import/export, AeroFTP can browse, decrypt and re-encrypt existing
rclone cryptremotes natively. Upload, download, rename, and delete all stream through a transparent crypto overlay session: the underlying provider sees only encrypted blobs and obfuscated filenames, while the UI shows plaintext paths. See the rclone crypt page.
rclone filter conversion:
aeroftp-cli import rclone-filter <path>converts an rclone--filter-fromfile (with+/-rules and#comments) into an.aeroignorefile. Rule order is reversed automatically to preserve rclone's first-match-wins semantics under gitignore last-match-wins. Brace alternation{a,b}and!reset directives are reported as warnings since they have no direct gitignore equivalent.
Web hosting providers can generate encrypted .aeroftp connection profiles from their control panels, so customers can import pre-configured FTP/SFTP connections with a single click - no manual setup, no credentials in plaintext emails.

AeroFTP defines seven user-facing file formats. Each has a single purpose and a distinct extension; desktop file associations are registered on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with .aerozip shipping CLI create/list/extract first. They are ordered from simplest to most advanced: compression, then encryption, then error correction, then the profile / script / keystore family.
.aerovault, .aeroftp and .aeroftp-keystore are encrypted with a user-chosen password at seal / export time. .aerozip is plaintext on purpose: it provides integrity and recovery (Reed-Solomon parity is on by default and opt-out, --recovery-level 0 for a smaller parity-free archive), not secrecy, and .aerocorrect is the detached form of that same recovery parity, carrying no secrets. .aeroignore and .aeroftp-script are also plaintext on purpose: they never carry secrets, so they can be checked into a repository, scheduled by cron / Task Scheduler, or shared with a teammate without any vault round-trip.

A full-featured local file manager built into AeroFTP. Toggle between remote and local modes, or use both side-by-side. Three view modes (list, grid, large icons), Places sidebar with drives and network shares, Quick Look preview (Space), drag-and-drop transfers, batch rename, duplicate finder, disk usage treemap, trash browser, properties dialog with checksums, and 20+ keyboard shortcuts.
v3.7.1 polish: aggregate multi-file Properties dialog (Windows-style mixed-state indicators across the selection), recursive * flatten search that lists every descendant under the current directory in one shot, smart "Open with default app" routing in the right-click menu (vault containers open in AeroFTP, scripts drop into the AeroTools Terminal with the right shell prefix, anything else goes through the OS), and a PathBar with empty-area edit mode plus a trailing chevron dropdown over first-generation subdirectories.
Dual panel (v3.7.9, Slice A): two local panels side by side in AeroFile mode, toggled via the Columns icon in the toolbar or Ctrl+Shift+D. Full keyboard parity on the second panel (F2 / Delete / Enter / Backspace / clipboard / Quick Look / properties / arrows / Shift+arrow / Home / End all route to the focused pane; Tab cycles between local and local2). Total-Commander shortcuts: F5 copies the selection to the other panel, F6 moves it, F7 creates a folder in the focused panel. Drag-and-drop between the two panes uses the existing rename_local_file / copy_local_file backend; Ctrl+drag switches from move (default) to copy. AeroMount is the Mount Manager of AeroFTP, reachable from File > AeroMount, the My Servers toolbar, and the connected remote address bar. Save multiple FUSE / WebDAV mount configs (profile, remote path, mountpoint, read-only, cache TTL, allow-other, auto-start) in either a plaintext sidecar JSON (default, daemon-friendly) or in the encrypted vault, toggleable from the dialog header. Per-row Mount / Unmount / Open in file manager / Edit / Delete actions, with a "Pick free drive letter" helper on Windows.
~/.config/systemd/user/aeroftp-mount-<id>.service units on Linux (Type=simple, Restart=on-failure) and Task Scheduler ONLOGON entries on Windows. Master-password vault mode blocks autostart with a clear UI explanation since the daemon cannot prompt for a password.aeroftp-cli through --profile against the same vault the GUI uses, mount configs only carry the profile id..aerovault or .aerozip as a read-only filesystem to browse its decrypted contents in your OS file manager, or run Save-All to export the whole decrypted tree in one shot to a folder, a .zip or a .aerozip. The password is passed to the mount process over stdin and never stored, and the mount auto-unmounts when you lock the vault or quit. macOS and Windows are a later step.Enterprise-grade file synchronization built for real-world reliability. Three sync profiles (Mirror, Two-way, Backup), conflict resolution center with per-file strategies, SHA-256 checksum verification, transfer journal with checkpoint/resume, configurable retry with exponential backoff, bandwidth control, post-transfer verification (4 policies), and structured error taxonomy with 10 categories. Integrates with AeroCloud for background tray sync.
Send a file or a folder straight to another person, end-to-end encrypted, with no server in the middle. AeroShare opens a direct peer-to-peer channel between the two devices (built on iroh 1.0 with Mainline-DHT discovery and federated relays as fallback), so the bytes never pass through a hosted account. Always-on at launch: a Discover tile with a 256-bit E2E badge, a +friend button in the titlebar, a draggable hub dialog and a status-bar receiver indicator. Add a friend or share a folder and the feature auto-activates; the standing receive loop is opt-in (a one-time prompt, changeable from Settings) so you decide when your device accepts incoming transfers. Each sender gets their own Inbox and an address book remembers the people you exchange with.
This is a Beta preview shipping in v4.1.0. The transport is hardened (iroh 1.0 cleared the prior dependency advisories) and decentralized by design, with more of the surface and notifications still being refined.
Independent clean-room Rust implementation of the rsync wire protocol 31. AeroRsync speaks bytes-on-wire to a standard remote rsync --server, so AeroFTP does byte-level delta sync without an rsync binary on the client - no rsync.exe bundle, no MSYS2, no WSL. That is the whole reason it exists: on Unix rsync is already everywhere, on Windows it is not, and bundling a GPL binary or demanding WSL would have split the product into a first-class Unix and a second-class Windows.
It does not replace rsync. It talks to it.
Where it runs. The Cargo feature aerorsync is compiled by default, and the runtime toggle (Settings → Advanced) has been ON by default in Auto mode since v3.8.0. On Unix Auto attempts the native engine first and keeps the classic rsync binary as a fallback; on Windows the native engine is the only delta path. Soft conditions (file below min_file_size, no key on disk, no remote rsync) route back to a plain upload; security failures (host-key mismatch, permission denied) are hard errors and never silently downgrade.
Where it is wired. AeroSync delta transfers, Cross-Profile SFTP-to-SFTP, and AeroTools Code Editor saves against a remote file - a one-line change to a 5 MB file ships only the differing blocks. AerorsyncBatch reuses one SSH session for N files in a sync batch, and SyncReport surfaces delta_files and bytes_on_wire so the UI shows which files took the optimized path and what it saved.
Compression on the wire. rsync negotiates which compressor carries the literal data, and the winner is the first name in your own advertised list that the peer also offers. That makes the list a promise, not a wish: AeroRsync advertises zstd zlibx none and drives all three, rather than mirroring stock rsync's zstd lz4 zlibx zlib none and hoping. Every rsync built before 3.2.0 has no zstd at all, which covers NAS firmware, embedded boxes and older LTS images, and those peers land on zlibx: raw deflate on one session-wide stream with a Z_SYNC_FLUSH boundary per record, pinned against a captured rsync 3.1.3 wire oracle that runs in CI alongside the 3.2.7 lane. Plain zlib is declined on purpose and structurally: it also feeds matched-block data through the compressor history on both ends, so decoding it needs inflateIncomp, a function rsync patches into the zlib it bundles and which exists in neither the system zlib nor any Rust crate. That is precisely why upstream split zlibx out. Listing none last means the two lists always intersect, so a peer offering only codecs we decline still gets a working delta transfer, just an uncompressed one, instead of dropping off the native path entirely.
Same 50 MB files, same container, same SSH loopback, back-to-back on an idle 24-core machine. The rsync side runs -logDtprcz, the client flags that produce byte-identical server arguments to the ones AeroRsync sends (-logDtprcze.iLsfxCIvu), verified with a wrapper that logged the server command line.

Read honestly, that is three different results. AeroRsync wins where a process would have to be spawned - a cold upload, a no-op, and twenty small files one at a time, where rsync pays a fresh ssh plus rsync fork per file and AeroRsync opens an in-process session. It loses the delta upload by ~30% while putting the same work on the wire: 3,748,322 bytes against rsync's 3,743,589, a 0.13% difference, so the gap is CPU in the encode path and not the protocol. And rsync still does the whole 20-file tree in one invocation in 1.31 s, which is 3.8× better than AeroRsync's per-file path - that is the recursive-scope gap, and AerorsyncBatch is what closes it at the transport layer.
Repeated across three runs the timings move by a few percent and the byte counts do not move at all. Detailed methodology, dataset characterisation and the full parity matrix: docs/PROTOCOL-RSYNC-COMPARE.md.
rsync --server in Docker: a byte-identical upload (sha256 match), streaming upload, symlinks both directions, user.* xattrs inline, out-of-band, binary-with-NUL and empty, the batch path over a single session, and a symlink proving it does not inherit its target's attributes.Single file per invocation: AeroRsync is a delta accelerator, not a tree walker - enumeration, deletion and retention stay with AeroSync, which owns its own safety gates. Protocol 31 only, SSH remote-shell only: no rsync:// daemon mode, and an endpoint negotiating protocol 27-30 is served by the stock binary instead. Metadata preserved today is mtime, permissions, symlinks (Unix) and user.* xattrs (Unix, -X); ACL, owner/group and device files are not implemented, and hardlinks are structurally blocked until recursive scope exists, because detecting that two paths share an inode needs the whole file list.
One version note worth stating plainly: upstream rsync dropped sha1 from the negotiated checksum list between 3.2.7 and 3.4.1. AeroRsync still implements it, and it works against peers that still offer it, but against a modern rsync it is simply not negotiable.
Since v4.0.0, AeroFTP has a shared, provider-agnostic DAG core and production runners for selected transfer paths. The graph is not a promise that every surface uses every shape: the active call path, the provider binding, and the wire-level behavior are separate facts.
UploadPart nodes and the begin/part/complete/abort lifecycle are real;
independent wire-level fan-out is currently available only where the
provider supplies an independent transfer worker (S3, Backblaze B2, Azure
Blob, and Nextcloud chunked v2). Other providers may build multipart nodes
but serialize provider calls through their shared session.server_side_copy_with_fallback helper. Native copies avoid a local payload;
recoverable capability failures fall back to download → upload. The
shaped_copy builder exists, but it is not the normal copy-command
orchestrator, so no DAG UploadPartCopy claim is made.shaped_ranges DAG path is opt-in through AEROFTP_RANGE_GRAPH=1; the
default provider path remains the bounded JoinSet scheduler, and Auto may
choose a single stream.The GUI, CLI, and MCP adapters therefore share engine primitives where their call paths reach them, but wire behavior is provider- and operation-dependent. Capabilities and runtime knobs are meaningful only on the command path that consumes them; they do not turn the batch, sync, copy, or default range paths into a fully unified parallel scheduler.

AeroVault v3 (content-addressed, Archive tier)
A content-addressed, deduplicating container that ships alongside v2 and is selectable as the Archive security level in the create dialog. v2 remains the default in the GUI and there is no automatic v2 → v3 migration; the full lifecycle is scriptable from the CLI for every format (aeroftp-cli vault create/add/info/extract, --vault-version v1|v2|v3 with header auto-detect, --cascade for the v2 paranoid mode, --receipt for the technical telemetry). The reader/writer is shared with the standalone aerovault crate (crates.io).

AeroVault v4 (v3 + Error Correction)
v4 is not a new container format, it is v3 plus a Reed-Solomon Error Correction layer, so a v3 reader still opens a v4 vault (it ignores the parity). Recovery data can be embedded in the container, kept in a detached sibling sidecar that leaves the encrypted container byte-identical, or both.

AeroFTP runs its own vulnerability audit pipeline that does not depend on any vendor SaaS. The pipeline aggregates three independent advisory databases (RustSec, npm registry, Google OSV) and cross-references findings against a documented suppression list with written rationales for every accepted advisory.
